📆 On Friday, May 30, 2025, at the headquarters of the National Agency for Energy Conservation (ANME) 🏢, an agreement was signed between ANME ⚡, the National Waste Management Agency (ANGED) 🗑️, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) 🇺🇳 to launch the project “Towards a Circular Economy Model for Waste Treatment and Recovery in Djerba” 🌴, funded by the Government of Japan 🇯🇵, the Italian Climate Fund 🇮🇹, and the UNDP 🌍.
🎉 The signing ceremony was attended by Mr. Fethi Hanchi, Director General of ANME, Mr. Badr Eddine Lassoued, Director General of ANGED, Ms. Céline Moyroud, UNDP Resident Representative, and several senior officials from the signing institutions.
🎯 The project aims to sustainably improve waste management in Djerba 🌱, while promoting the local green economy 💼 and enhancing climate resilience 🌡️. It forms part of the national effort for decarbonization 🌿 by supporting energy recovery from waste ⚗️ and creating sustainable jobs in key sectors such as sorting, recycling, and biomethane production 🔄💡.
🛠️ The project represents the first step toward solving the waste problem in Djerba, through the energy recovery of organic waste 🌾. It is expected to be operational in early 2026 📅.
🔋 The project will enable the production of biogas from organic waste ♨️, which will be either injected into the national natural gas grid 🔌 or converted into electricity ⚡.
📢 It is noteworthy that the project will be replicated across other regions of the country in future phases under a public-private partnership framework 🤝🏛️🏢.
